The Permanent Mission of Panama to the United Nations refers to the situation regarding the vessel MV Chong Chon Gang, flying the flag of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, and informs that it has taken steps to address the matter in accordance with instructions received from His Excellency Ricardo Martinelli Berrocal, President of the Republic of Panama, noting that the United Nations has specific mechanisms to deal with situations such as the one at hand.

President Martinelli has been very clear in his instructions and in Panama’s adherence to all legal obligations it is required to comply with as a Member State.

Faithful to its obligations under the Charter of the United Nations, the National Government immediately notified the matter to the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1718 (2006). The Permanent Mission has met and remains in contact with members of the Panel of Experts of the Committee.  President Martinelli, as well as Minister of Foreign Affairs Fernando Núñez Fábrega and Minister of Security José Raúl Mulino, are being kept abreast of the talks and all actions are being coordinated.  The National Government has extended an invitation to the Panel of Experts to consult with the relevant national authorities and to inspect the vessel and its cargo.  This visit is expected to take place August 5.
