SANTO DOMINGO - The Vice President and Foreign Minister of the Republic of Panama, Juan Carlos Varela, participated on Wednesday at the World Summit on the Future of Haiti: Solidarity beyond the Crisis, convened by the Government of the Dominican Republic in order to confirm the commitment of the international community and ensure sustained support for the implementation of the Refoundation Plan and Action Plan for the reconstruction of that country, following the earthquake in January.
Chancellor Varela, who participated in the bureau on land management led by President Leonel Fernandez, congratulated President Fernandez for his leadership in the efforts towards the reconstruction of Haiti, and reiterated that the Government of President Ricardo Martinelli will donate one (1) million dollars, noting that it will be used mainly in food security, including the distribution of dairy products to combat childhood malnutrition.
To this end, Panama will contribute to the participation of national human resources, including professionals and technicians in the reconstruction effort. In addition, Panama will work to strengthen the Mission in Haiti and assess the possibility of establishing a program of technical and professional assistance in several areas. In particular, he noted that Panama is expected to play an important role in the monitoring effort in the coming elections.
The Program developed by the highest authorities in Latin America and the Caribbean, the European Union and other representatives of donor countries and friends of Haiti, yielded information on the situation in Haiti after five months past the earthquake; reviewed the commitments of about 80 donor countries and organizations, identified priority projects for the implementation of the Action Plan for the Reconstruction of Haiti whose main pillars are: Economic Refoundation, Territorial Refoundation, Social Refoundation, Institutional Refoundation and Cultural and Artistic Recovery in Haiti.
Among other efforts made by Panama in solidarity with Haiti, are the dispatch of experts specialized rescuers National Civil Protection System (SINAPROC), the transfer of 10,000 pounds of dry food and miscellaneous supplies, and the efforts to receive, in Panama's national territory, Haitians with humanitarian visas.
With the participation of Chancellor Varela in this World Summit, Panama reaffirms its support for the efforts of the international community is making, to rebuild the Caribbean nation after the earthquake of 12 February.
The Head of the Panamanian diplomacy was accompanied by Ambassador Alfredo Castillero Hoyos, Director General of Foreign Policy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic and the President of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Assembly, the Honorable Francisco Alemán.
